In the heart of New Bahru, Singapore, Dearborn, a breakfast cafe, sister company to Dearborn Granola at Everton, has opened its doors, bringing life back to what was once Nan Chiau High School. This space has been transformed into a bustling mixed commercial cluster by the innovative minds at Lo and Behold. Designed by us, this cafe encapsulates a vision of modern dining while retaining a sense of home and comfort.

Embracing Natural Light
From the outset, our client emphasized the importance of natural lighting. They wanted the cafe to be bathed in sunlight, creating a bright and welcoming environment. We achieved this by retaining the large windows ensuring that the space is filled with natural light throughout the day.
A Canine-Friendly Outdoor Oasis
Understanding their existing clientele, who bring their four legged family when they visit the existing Dearborn Everton outlet, the client requested a dedicated outdoor seating area for guests with canine companions. This area is thoughtfully designed with comfortable seating and durable materials, making it an inviting spot for both pets and their owners. It’s a perfect place for a leisurely breakfast while enjoying the fresh air and the vibrant surroundings of New Bahru.
The Heart of the Cafe: Bread and Coffee Bar
Central to the cafe’s design is the bread and coffee bar. This area serves as both a visual and functional focal point, where guests can watch the art of bread-making and coffee-brewing unfold. The bar is designed with sleek, modern lines and high-quality materials, reflecting the cafe’s commitment to excellence and craftsmanship. It’s a place where the aroma of freshly baked bread and brewing coffee mingles, creating an irresistible atmosphere.
Diverse Seating Options
To cater to different dining preferences, the cafe features three distinct seating areas:
- Lounge Area: Designed for relaxation, this area features chesterfield couches, low height tables and a cozy ambiance. It’s perfect for guests who want to unwind with a cup of coffee or enjoy a leisurely breakfast.
- Communal Table: Emphasizing community and connection, the communal table is a large, inviting space where guests can gather, share meals, and engage in conversation. It’s ideal for both solo diners and groups looking to connect.
- Banquette Dining Area: For those who prefer a more traditional dining experience, this area offers a range of seating options, from intimate two-person tables to larger setups for families and friends.
An Open Kitchen Experience
One of the standout features of the cafe is its open kitchen. The client wanted to blur the lines between the kitchen and dining area, allowing guests to witness the culinary magic firsthand. This design choice not only highlights the skills and artistry of the kitchen team but also fosters a sense of connection between diners and chefs. Cooking becomes a theatrical experience, enhancing the overall dining atmosphere.
While staying true to the client’s vision, we infused the project with our unique flair. Our goal was to make diners feel at home, as if they were in an extension of their living room. The decor combines modern elegance with cozy elements, creating a space that is welcoming. Thoughtfully chosen furniture, materiality, and greenery contribute to the overall ambiance, making the cafe a place where guests will want to linger.
This breakfast cafe in New Bahru is more than just a dining destination; it’s a community hub that brings people together. With its focus on natural light, pet-friendly outdoor space, diverse seating options, and an open kitchen, it offers a unique and memorable experience. We’re proud to have been part of this transformation, turning a historic site into a contemporary, inviting space that embodies the spirit of New Bahru.
