Embarking on a journey of transformative makeovers, our design studio encountered a commercial project that unfolded like a puzzle—a space with dated floor plans from 1994, obscured by layers of previous renovations and structural uncertainties. This article sheds light on the challenges faced and the ingenious solutions employed to weave three distinct spaces into a harmonious whole, showcasing the potential hidden within architectural ambiguity.
The Challenge: Deciphering Dated Drawings and Layers of Renovations
The initial challenge stemmed from floor plans hand-drawn in 1994, offering little clarity on structural versus non-structural walls. Compounding the complexity, layers of renovations by previous tenants obscured the true essence of the space. Some windows were blocked, and the entire layout lacked a clear delineation of structural elements. The guesswork extended to plumbing and structural integrity, making it a truly multifaceted puzzle.
The Solutions: Illuminating Ambiance and Versatile Spaces
Embracing Natural Light:
Addressing the ambiguity surrounding windows, our first solution was to reintroduce natural light. All windows on the plan were allowed to open, and sheer curtains were employed to create a light and airy ambience, transforming the space into a welcoming canvas for design.
Dramatic Entryway:
To establish a visual focal point and make a statement from the outset, we introduced a large, oversized timber panel entryway. This dramatic entrance not only added a touch of grandeur but also set the tone for the transformative journey within.
Versatile Corridor Design:
Recognizing the need for versatility, especially in the era of multifunctional spaces, we transformed the extended corridor into a dynamic zone. High tables lined the corridor, creating a flexible workspace for individuals to work between classes. This intentional design choice seamlessly blended form and function.
