DISCOVERING THE VIBRANT SIDE OF SINGAPORE; BRYAN GOH’S INSIDER GUIDE

At CP Studio, we believe that Singapore is far from boring, and we’re here to prove it. In this article, we’ve invited Bryan Goh, a magazine editor who more often than not randomly finds himself off the beaten path. Once he even had his stomach pumped in Berlin after a misadventure so you can probably guess what type of activities he’s going to recommend. Buckle up and get ready to explore the hidden gems of the city-state.

Please share 5 places/activities to go/do in Singapore, each accompanied by a brief blurb explaining what you love about it.

ONE: I’m perpetually at Tess Bar & Kitchen because the service staff genuinely remembers your name and how you like to eat or drink—a truly underrated experience. Plus, they serve Gin & Tonics that are always ice-cold, just the way I love it.

TWO: Go thrifting at LPB Thrift! If you enjoy the thrill of the hunt, this store on the top floor of Lucky Plaza is the place to be. I’ve spent hours there, uncovering serious gems like Courreges, Bob Mackie, and Burberry. Remember to check both the color and the fabric before making your final choice, and inspect the piece inside-out for any stains.

THREE: Admire the largest collection of Jellycat toys in Singapore Did you know that home retailer Deer Industries sells the largest collection of Jellycat toys? They are unbelievably adorable! Whenever I’m in the area, I visit the store just to admire these cuddly toys, although I tend to leave when the salespeople start eyeing me suspiciously.

FOUR: Open mike karaoke at Ming’s Cafe & Pub. Fun fact: I had my first wild night here, courtesy of my cousins, which probably means alcoholism runs rampant in my family. The bar’s open mike karaoke concept is always entertaining, especially watching old folks happily sing everything from 60s Canto-music to rock songs. Don’t be shy to join in—even if you’re not a great singer, the crowd is supportive and friendly.

How do you know you’ve truly had an enjoyable day? When you can reminisce about it and smile.

FIVE: Picnic at Changi Bay Point Boardwalk This hidden gem revealed itself to me during a walk from Changi Village to the airport (PS: bad idea). The boardwalk offers stunning waterfront views, making it an ideal spot for picnics. On some lucky nights, we’ve even witnessed shooting stars while stargazing here.

Boring is a state of mind; it’s time to re-frame your narrative and experience Singapore with rose tinted glasses. Follow Bryan Goh’s recommendations and embark on a journey that may surprise and delight you. Get out there and explore the unique offerings this city has to offer—there’s more to Singapore than meets the eye!
